And many long-time Universal Orlando Resort fans will remember the Dueling Dragons rollercoaster, where guests could choose between the red dragon fire, which had an extra drop, and the blue ice, which featured an extra loop (guess which one I always went on?). Well, don’t go looking for Dueling Dragons, because you won’t find it- though it’s still there. The new Wizarding World of Harry Potter changed the rollercoaster to fit the theme; it’s still the same great coaster, with a different name.

I remember when the lines to get into the Spiderman ride were over an hour long- the 3D cart ride is still very popular, though thankfully the lines have gotten shorter over the years. You go on a news mission to capture images of crime for the Daily Bugle, only to get caught up in an evil plan. Spiderman comes to the rescue- but as he battles a group of super villains, will you make it out alive? And more importantly- did you manage to get any photos??

Finally, the Cat In the Hat ride at Seuss Landing is a must-see: the vehicle spins around in circles and travels through the story, told straight from the book. Definitely one of my favorites and not one to be missed!

The result is a vast network of corridors that is often called Magic Kingdom’s “underground city.” This area is off-limits to anyone under the age of sixteen (in case children see costumed characters without heads, or princesses eating lunch and acting un-princess-y.) and contain sanitation crews, locker rooms, cafeterias, a hair salon for employees (Kingdom Kutters), costuming; empty rehearsal rooms, check cashing…. It really is a “world under the World”!

Now, a common misconception is that the Utilidors are located at basement level. In truth, the nine-acre Utilidors are located at ground level- over seven million cubic yards of soil from the Bay Lake and the Seven Seas Lagoon was piled up on top, and the Cinderella castle is actually on the third level, with most rides being on the second.

The only way to get into the Utilidor tunnels are as a cast member, and by bus. Showing ID, the cast members go through the entrance, out of view of the guests. No matter what job they have, be it ride operator, character, or clean-up duty, as soon as a cast member exit’s the Utilidors they are “onstage.” There are entry points in all of the Magic Kingdom areas- Tomorrowland, Adventureland, and etc., with the tunnels arranged in spokes with the castle as the center of the well-oiled ‘wheel.’

Pin trading is a Disney hobby that can often turn into a near obsession. It officially began in 1999 in Disneyland. Not only will Disney pin collectors scour the internet and nearby retail stores, they will happily trade with fellow enthusiasts- one pin for another, one pin set for another pin set. After all, that is precisely what the Disney pin trading hobby is all about!

Some trades occur in the mail or through the internet, but most trades are done within the Disney parks- and it isn’t limited to the United States parks either. It also isn’t limited to age- from children to the older “inner child” crowd, it’s a popular activity within any age group. Most trades start when someone buys a pin or five as a souvenir, and sees another they like better. They decide to trade, and voila! Pin trading becomes a fun part of their life as well. It’s impossible to collect every pin; there are over 60,000 (yes, you read that right!) pins. There are sets, some large and some limited to only a few pins. Some can be expensive, while other pins can be pretty cheap, especially on eBay and other internet auction sites. Some people trade for the money value, while others just really, really want that pin, I’ll pay double!

Epcot’s DiveQuest is a program which allows SCUBA certified divers to go into Epcot’s large Seas with Nemo and Friends pavilion’s  6.7-million-gallon Caribbean Coral Reef aquarium tank and swim with the marine life in guided tours for about 40 minutes, along with a 3-hour tour of the area. The aquarium was the largest saltwater tank in the world until 2005. The tank stays 77 degrees and is 27 feet deep. It contains about 60 species of marine life and over 6,000 sea creatures, such as rays, sharks, angelfish, and more. The animals (some over 20 years old) are fed twice a day, so they are used to divers in the tanks.

Divers are prohibited from bringing their own equipment to prevent contamination of the closed system. However, you must bring a swimsuit and you can bring a mask. There is one guide for every 4 divers and everyone stays together. Divers must be at least 10 years of age, and those under 15 are required to be accompanied by a SCUBA certified adult. The tour includes a view of the infrastructure used to maintain and filter the massive aquarium. It has clear waters and no currents, making it easy to swim in.

There are also tours for those that are not SCUBA certified- Epcot offers the Dolphins in Depth or Seas Aqua tours.

But not every wedding needs to be held there- over 10 weddings can be held per day at Disney World. You can choose from any of the four main theme parks for a wedding. It can get expensive- the Escape Wedding Collections for two begins at $4500, with prices soaring up to $20,000 or more for about 50 people. Since the park opening in 1998, the births include a siamang, giraffes, white rhinos, an okapi, five Micronesian Kingfishers (there are only 68 left in the world!), and many, many more. Since 2003, three African elephants were born- Tufani, Kianga, and Nadirah. The most recent birth is of a young gorilla named Lilly. She is the third endangered gorilla to be born into the family, the first of which was in 1997 (before the park opening) and the second in 1999. And just before that, in February, a male white-cheeked gibbon was born. The first birth at the park was an African Kudu antelope.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom also trains its animals from a young age to be part of their own medical care; pheasants are trained to stand on scales for weight monitoring, Galapagos tortoises are trained to stand on a ramp (keepers can check the underside of their shells), and so on.

Through habitat design and new scents and spices around their habitats, animals are encouraged to be curious and explore their environment.

The park closes earlier than other Disney theme parks, due to concern for the animals’ well-being. It does not have a fireworks show and animals are kept on a strict schedule- even when the park closes later, animals are brought back into their habitats.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom successfully blends wildlife and rollercoaster rides as the 5th most visited theme park in the united states (and 8th most visited in the world).

And don’t forget Universal Orlando- connecting the two theme parks is CityWalk, also surrounding a lake. It has stores, restaurants, carnival games, hotels, and a variety of clubs and bars. It also features a huge stage for live music, as well as the Hard Rock Live and Hard Rock Cafe for music buffs. You can also visit the movie theater or get a tattoo. It’s a great place to grab a Cinnabon or slice of pizza between park visits or just hanging out with the locals. The only downside is having to pay for parking, but it’s definitely worth the fee. It’s open until 2am and there is usually something interesting going on, such as Mardi Gras or concerts.
