Fun Facts – Disney World’s Monorail System

How much do you know about the Disney World monorail system?

There are currently 12 different monorail trains in use. Which is a good thing, because roughly 150,000 guests ride the monorail every day.Disney World opened up the system in 1971 and it’s been used ever since. Walt Disney funded the transportation system using the profits from the movie Mary Poppins.

There are three types of trains:

Express: Express service between the Magic Kingdom and the Transportation and Ticket Center.

Resort: Round-trip local service making stops at the Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Contemporary Resort, the Transportation and Ticket Center, Disney’s Polynesian Resort, and Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa.

Epcot: Service between the Transportation and Ticket Center and Epcot.

Undoubtedly, you have heard of the fatal monorail crash in July of this year, which killed a 21-year-old monorail pilot. No guests were hurt, and it is the first fatality in the monorail system since its opening.

Monorails are designed for safety, and are run through safety tests daily. Disney World has a fire station nearby that can rush to any point in the parks quickly and efficiently in case there is any sort of accident.

The monorail system is safe, reliable, and a very quick way to get from point A to point B (or D if you prefer!). And if you like it as much as the local guests and employees do, you can pick up some monorail merchandise from the gift shops- such as a miniature battery-powered monorail, collector’s pins, and more.
