Disney world vacations, Universal, SeaWorld… all Orlando parks have one thing in common: merchandise that is often overpriced. One small toy or keychain won’t cost much, but it quickly adds up after the candy, souvenirs, gifts for grandma, and I-have-to-have-that-shirt. But there is always a way to get lots of souvenirs with lots of savings.
If you don’t want to have to leave the parks to get cool merchandise, but your kids are asking for everything in sight, there are several ways to curb their enthusiasm. For small children, having them point out what they want so that they can pick ONE thing at the end of the day- or trip- will give them the chance to choose what they really want, as well as give you a chance to make them happy without emptying your pockets.
For younger kids that can count, giving them play money and exchanging it for real money when they’re at the register, or- in Disney World’s case- Disney dollars can help them realize that when the money’s gone, it’s gone, so they should choose wisely.
Older kids can earn their own money through chores or birthdays and holidays, so they know they have only their own money to spend- and not mom and dad’s. This clears up your budget for other things, such as a restaurant out of the parks, or a special treat later on.
If you’re willing to drive or take a taxi to other areas around Orlando, you will find many great deals on merchandise. Downtown Disney World, for instance, has a very large Disney store and next to it is a Mickey Mart- everything there is $10 or under.
Are your kids asking for light-up toys and glow-in-the-dark necklaces? Dollar stores and chain stores such as Target and WalMart have plenty of substitutes to keep your kids happy, limiting the expensive souvenirs they will want. A great substitute is glow bracelets- they mix and match, you can often get a pack of at least ten for the price of one at the parks, and you are likely to find cooler ones than they could get otherwise. You can also use them to keep track of your kids, bags, and strollers when it gets dark. If you don’t use some, they are likely to work on your next trip. And many party stores have glow sticks, bubble necklaces, and more with themes such as Disney, Universal characters, ocean themes for SeaWorld, and others appropriate for your vacation.
Finally, don’t wait to get to the airport to get that last Disney World, Unioversal Studios or Sea World souvenir; there are a store for each of the at the airport, but you’ll pay even more for those.
Take note: sippy cups with water and glitter built in are NOT allowed in carry-on luggage. Snow globes are also prohibited. Check them into your luggage so you can take them home with you!
