Disney's Hollywood Studios
Formerly knows as Disney-MGM Studios, this third Disney
World theme park is modeled after Hollywood in the 1930s
and ‘40s. It opened May 1, 1989. Its origins come from
Epcot- the park’s most famous ride, the Great Movie
Ride, was designed to be part of Epcot’s Future World
section. Then-CEO Michael Eisner suggested that instead,
it should be part of a new theme park which would center
on showbiz, Hollywood, and entertainment. It even had a
working television and motion picture production
facility, and produced such works as Earnest saves
Christmas, Mulan, Lilo & Stitch, Brother Bear,
and other popular movies. One of the urban legends
behind this park is that Eisner, while working for
Paramount Pictures, saw the plans for Universal Studios
in Orlando, and brought the idea with him to Disney
World. Some say that it is the other way around. In
truth, neither theme park copied the other, both opening
at around the same time and being similar out of
coincidence.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios’ icon is the Sorcerer’s Hat,
built in front of the Great Movie Ride. It was
constructed in 2001 for Disney’s 100 Years of Magic
and replaced the Earful Tower as the park’s icon. The
tower, however, still stands, and is undergoing
renovations to change the name painted on it.
